I’ve been lucky to visit this unique city several times, from stopovers on cross-country road trips to fall wedding weekends. Every visit brings with it new fun finds and unforgettable memories. And I always have a growing list of things on my list for the next visit.

The Biltmore Estate
The Biltmore Estate is one of the most remarkable destinations in all of North Carolina. It is an absolute must-see for any traveler to Asheville. Built by George and Edith Vanderbilt in 1895, this lavish estate covers 8,000 acres and includes the breathtaking 175,000-square-foot mansion known as America’s Largest Home. Guests can explore the historic house with its art collection, 65 fireplaces, 10,000 volumes of books in the library, and bowling alley!
But the Biltmore experience isn’t just limited to touring the historic grounds. Visitors can also explore the estate’s 75 acres of gardens, go kayaking, biking, or even croqueting, all in the shadow of the Blue Ridge Mountains. And when you’re done, enjoy some wine tasting at the winery! There are a stunning amount of experiences here, for everyone from history buffs to outdoor adventurers.
There are also 14 dining options on-site and three accommodations for overnight stays. Honestly, it’s easy to stay here and never even leave the property. That’s what happened to me on my first visit to Asheville!
Asheville Urban Trail
Asheville, North Carolina, is a city steeped in history and culture. Did you know that there’s also a unique way to explore the city’s past? The Asheville Urban Trail is a two-hour leisurely walk that takes visitors around the downtown area. Following the trail introduces you to the intriguing past and the larger-than-life characters that made the city the unique place it is today.
Start your journey in front of Pack Place on Asheville’s Pack Square and look for Plaque #1, a “Walk Into History.” From there, look for each of the 30 trail stations that provide tidbits about the city’s rich past.

The Grove Arcade
Though the Grove Arcade has a stop along Asheville’s Urban Trail, it very much deserves a section of its own. It is a stunning piece of architecture, culture, and history that should not be missed.
Built by E.W. Grove in 1929, the Arcade was built to celebrate the city and its vibrant culture. The Arcade features ornate architecture and an eclectic mix of shops and restaurants. Take your time exploring. A wander here can provide a full-day immersion into the Asheville lifestyle.

You’ll also find one of the most spectacular floral displays along the Parkway’s 469-mile corridor. Though most visitors flock to see the rhododendrons that bloom here each June, violets, blackberries, May-apples, and Turkscap lilies keep them enchanted throughout the seasons.

For a quieter river journey, start the day with Lazy Otter Outfitters. Their location is further south and you’ll experience fewer crowds.
Tubing conditions vary depending on water levels. Be sure to check in with your chosen outfitter to learn about current conditions. Tubing season is from Memorial Day Weekend through Labor Day Weekend. Don’t forget to bring plenty of water and sunscreen!
Drive the Blue Ridge Parkway

The section of Blue Ridge Parkway that spans Asheville offers gorgeous views of some of the highest peaks in the East. With no admission fees and plenty of viewpoints to stop at, driving the Blue Ridge Parkway is a wonderful way to explore this unique landscape.
The Blue Ridge Parkway Visitor Center is in Asheville and makes a good place to start your journey. Here visitors can learn about the stunning stretch of highway and its breathtaking views. The center is located at Milepost 382 and features interactive exhibits, maps, and souvenirs for travelers to purchase.
Other memorable stops near Asheville are Mount Mitchell at Milepost 355.4 and the Folk Art Center at Milepost 382. Mount Mitchell is the tallest mountain east of the Mississippi. You can drive almost the whole way to the summit! From the parking lot, an easy half-mile hike leads to an observation deck. Just about 27 miles south of Mount Mitchell, the Folk Art Center showcases the region’s best arts and crafts.
Don’t Miss Fall in Asheville!
